ABOUT US
Mission
The National Garifuna Council (NGC) advances the rights, development, and cultural continuity of Garinagu in Belize and abroad—preserving language, music, cuisine, dance, crafts, art, and sacred rituals—while driving inclusive economic sustainability, fostering interracial harmony, and stewarding the environment. We prioritize education and skills training (especially for youth) and deliver projects that strengthen culture and improve quality of life.
Organization & Delivery Model
NGC is a volunteer-led, nonprofit NGO governed by a Constitution. To scale impact and close capacity gaps, we are executing an Institutional Strengthening Project supported by DANIDA (via the Inter-American Development Bank) with co-funding from NGC and the Government of Belize—building community-based income opportunities aligned with Garifuna values. Regionally, we collaborate with ONEGUA (Guatemala), OFRANEH (Honduras), and OAGANIC (Nicaragua), and we are members of CABO (Central American Black Organization) and BITI (Belize Indigenous Training Institute).
